Darlene Joyce Basel was born October 19, 1923 to Holga and Hazel (Riley) Fallesen in Tilden, NE. She graduated from Tilden High School and almost immediately began her life-long career as a teacher. She taught in many Antelope County rural districts. She spent many years teaching students from rural districts 35 and 47 South and East of Neligh. She married Albert J. Basel on June 29, 1947. They had one son, Arlyn Basel. Albert passed away in 1972 and Darlene then went back to college and got her bachelors degree. She then began her career as a 2nd grade teacher in the Neligh-Oakdale Public Schools retiring in 1990. Known as "Mrs. Basel" by many current and former residents of Antelope County, she loved her students each and every one and called them "her kids" the year she had them in class. Darlene spent her last years at the Willows Assisted Living Center and the Golden Living Center in Neligh. She always enjoyed visiting with and meeting former students and their families.

Darlene leaves behind her son, Arlyn Basel and his wife Jean of Ankeny, IA, and grandchildren: Chad Basel and Krystal Vriezelaar and her husband Todd and great grandson: Jackson Basel, step great grandchildren Carter and Megan Vriezelaar and her brother Melvin Fallesen of Albany, OR and sister, Nadine Hughes of Neligh, NE and many friends and former students to cherish her memory.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Norman Fallesen, and brother-in-law, Gordon Hughes.

Darlene will be remembered by many current and former Antelope County students as "A Good Teacher"
